Best Web Tools for College Students

I have a set of Web sites / Web tools that I use on a regular basis. As a student, they’re handy because they either a) help me get things done or b) educate / inform me about things I need to know.

Here’s a medley of sites and tools that I love to use (or plan to start using very soon)!

1) Writely - The “Web word processor.” Allows you to save your work and documents on the Web, and access them from anywhere.

2) Soundslides - Storytelling management made easy. Allows you to easily merge sound and audio to create and audio slideshow presentations. Requires a small registration fee.

3) Bluedot.Us - A great social bookmarking/networking service. With the click of a button, you can “Dot” a Web site / page that you find interesting and instantly share it with all of your friends. Perfect for groups of students who have similar interests - it’s an easy way to share information.

4) eFax - Need to receive a fax? Do it for free over e-mail! eFax will hook you up with a phone number that you can give to people…your faxes will show up in your inbox.

5) PDF Online - Create PDFs for free. I’ve used this on numerous occasions in conjunctions w/ e-fax. It’s great when you don’t have a scanner handy. Just e-fax yourself the document and then convert it into a pdf.

6) Google Calendar - Add events and activities to this simple and easy to use calendar. You can also share your calendar with other people, have multiple calendars, and have events e-mailed to you or sent to your cell phone.

7) Google Spreadsheets - I’ve only just started using this, but it seems like a great way to create and save spreadsheets online.

8) Bloglines - A way to search for and subscribe to news feeds and blogs. Not so new anymore, but I use it every day.

9) Technorati - They claim to track 51.3 million blogs. You can search for pretty much any type of blog you are looking for. However, I have heard there are other (perhaps better) options to Technorati these days.

10) mynoteIT - mynoteIT is a free service built for students to help keep school information organized and have it easily accessable whenever, wherever.

Hi, I am Cliff from EditGrid. Besides Google spreadsheets, there are various online spreadsheets working in different directions, includes EditGrid and Numbler which you may wish to try. EditGrid can get live stockquote and forex. Here is a demo.
Of course we wouldn’t forget our fundamentals, the spreadsheet functions, drag and fill, advance number formatting, undo/redo… all are available. Here is a comparison between EditGrid and Google.

Thanks Cliff - I’ll check it out!

I love your list, but I would want to submit for your approval a complete information control and management suite designed for students that I have created, called Student Manager (http://www.student-manager.com), that can help any student get through the grind of day-to-day academic life. And I am always open and receptive to requests and suggestions, and try my best to accomodate all of them that are reasonable, especially since I, myself, use the program, as a current student at Northeastern University (http://www.neu.edu).

It’s a good list except none of these tools are specifically geared towards students like http://mynoteit.com or http://facebook.com which in my opinion are more “web tools for students” than firefox or technorati.

Why use pdf online when theres cutepdf writer. Much better.

Mostly these posts don’t do it for me, but your’s has given me somethine new (kudos!): eFax. Will be checking that out as fax is quite a struggle on those (very few) occasions where its necessary. As a personal preference, I’d have to say that Newshutch (www.newshutch.com) does a better job than Bloglines. Also for your and your audiences’ consideration is Ta-Da Lists from 37Signals (www.tadalist.com). I have a section for each of my classes and keep track of assignments there.

Thanks, good list. Already knew about most of them but the blue dot one sounds interesting. You could potentially take advantage of those media sites like TinyPic ( http://www.tinypic.com ) for image and video hosting or FreeTube ( http://www.FreeTube.us.tc ) for watching a few tv channels online , or News Vine ( http://www.newsvine.com ) for some great and varied news articles aggregated from around the world.

For receiving faxes I’d suggest http://k7.net/ over eFax as it adds voice mail and I don’t believe there are limits on the number of faxes received each month as with eFax which limits you to 20 pages a month.

Crap on a cracker is still crap.

The problem with web-apps is they are web-apps. They perform only as well as your internet connection.

Local applications (that run on your own computer) are much faster and more reliable. Open source software is your friend! Have a look at sourceforge and you’ll find tons of free applications.

Open Office has professional quality word processing, spreadsheet, database a much more. There are tons of other software available.

I came over from digg, and just wanted to recommend another tool called Groupvine.

It’s a group management tool for campus groups like fraternities, club sports teams, or College Republicans/Democrats. You can assign ToDos, keep a group calendar, and have discussions (forum style). There’s also a member directory. I think they’re working on adding a finance part that lets you collect dues online.

We use it for my fraternity and College Republicans chapter, and it really helps us stay organized.

Hi,

Interesting list. Note that you can also create pdf’s straight from openoffice (www.openoffice.org) - which I think would also be a good tool for (cash-straped) students.

There’s a new service that was just launched called ‘Notemesh’ ( http://notemesh.com ) that will allow students to work on one unified version of classnotes as a wiki.

You should check it out!

A post about school utilities is not complete without mentioning http://stu.dicio.us. Writely is great, but when you’re taking notes, Studicous’ minimalism is where it’s at.

Not mentioning Facebook either? For shame.

Meebo http://www.meebo.com is essential for students who need IM in their computer lab. eNotes, http://www.enotes.com is the best research suite but it’s subscription-only. Some schools have access though.

Comment by Ted 09.26.06 @ 9:26 am

Be sure to check out http://gradefix.com which is a smart scheduler that can help you decide what to study. It’s web-based so you can use it at home or on campus.

Hey,
I found your blog while looking for info on grad school, but I figured I’d suggest my own note taking solution thing.

Notecentric is for taking and sharing notes online with your classmates. It’s still in beta, but I’m using it for my notes, as are a few of my friends. Please try it out and let me know what you think.

Also, this blog is pretty sweet. Like seriously.

I think a great web tool for student clubs and organizations is CollegeMailer - It acts as a whole Student Life Portal at NYU Stern. Club officers can manage membership, send targeted emails, create events with RSVPs, make web pages, administer surveys, and more.

I’m not currently a student but do hope to go back within the next year. This list is terrific and there are several suggestions I plan on using whether attending college or not.

Comment by Faith Draper 06.25.07 @ 1:43 pm

Here is a list of free open source software on the web. http://www.entreprenuts.com/?page_id=59 Also would be very helpful for students.

Comment by Rashid 07.29.07 @ 8:07 pm

This is excellent stuff! You should submit a link on StudentUP.com to share your content, get it rated and reach a larger audience. Thanks for sharing. Cheers!

A great tool for students is http://www.skoogO.com. It’s an information networking site for your school, classes, concentrations, interests, etc.
