This guy explains in the smart magazine The American, with more eloquence and less crankiness than I, what has gone wrong with the SAT. It’s an excellent article and totally explains why I have such a severe dislike of that most vile example of standardized tests.

Great find! It’s definitely a well written summary of the case against the SAT. In fact, the more and more I read, the more I feel that this author is spot on: Just kill the test.

However, I think he’s a bit harsh on coaching. As an SAT/ACT tutor myself, I know that kids absolutely benefit from learning test taking skills. Yes, some of them benefit a lot (100-200 points) and some don’t benefit at all. Generally high school GPA is a good indicator of how much work they will put in to improving.
