[...] Sometimes it’s hard to change your ways so as to avoid evilness. I love books (have I mentioned that before?) and am probably the last human on Earth who would buy a damn Kindle thingy and start reading my “books” on a screen. However (here comes the part where I clear my throat and mumble about how sometimes change is good and it’s possible I was wrong), in light of the unavoidable fact that textbook publishers are vile bastards with severely bankrupt karma, digital textbooks may be the way to go. Cheaper, lighter, easier on the back, healthier for the trees, etc. [...]

@grant--By 'informal education' I was referring to the learning and reading we do on our own outside of school.

@Bahram--Medical school is a good example: anyone could teach themselves as much as possible about the medical profession, certainly, but the people in charge require a medical degree earned in a formal setting before they'll let anyone head out into the world and hang their 'The Doctor Is In' shingle.

That's great but I didn't think she asked for a definition. Aside from that, I'm curious to know what you could not learn on your own through books, etc... that you could only learn in a formal setting, Alexa?

Informal education is a form of alternative education such as homeschooling and online education. It usually happens outside in the classroom. After-school providers, by contrast, vary in experience and knowledge of teaching techniques, content expertise, and group management. Typically, materials for after-school settings need to include a lot more structure.
