The thing that cannot be taught, that can only be learned, like riding a bicycle, is the responsibility and self-discipline that goes with the freedom of college. I was fortunate that my parents had not learned this and thus did not try to teach it to me so I had a somewhat easier time learning it.

That was a valuable lesson to me as a parent, always asking myself what could be taught to my daughter, and what could not but that I could prepare her to learn.
